The Last Crusade?
While seeing the drama play out these past three and a half years, I’m reminded of the scene from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade where Indy travels to Berlin to recover the Grail diary from Ilsa, who is attending a Nazi book-burning party in honor of Hitler. He’s just escaped certain death (resulting from her very personal betrayal) at the hands of Nazis. When he catches up to her in Berlin she claims not to believe in the Nazi ideology, but in a higher purpose. In response Indy says, “You stood up to be counted with the enemies of everything the Grail stands for. Who gives a damn what you believe?”
So to those who claim to love America, but apparently can’t bring yourself to love Americans who don’t look or act like you, how dare you castigate those who rise and protest the rights and lives of Americans being destroyed? How dare you claim to love the American flag that stands for an indivisible nation when you insist on decorating yourself in the treasonous Confederate flag that stood for a bloody dividing of the country and oppression of black Americans. “One nation, under God, indivisible…” Though the middle part of that phrase was only added in 1954 with little regard for the danger the amalgam of church and state entails, let’s address it. You claim to believe in God but have no interest in reflecting His character.
“With liberty and justice for all…” yet you cheer when brown children are stolen from their parents and locked in cages.
You embrace murderous cops who target people of color in their brutal attacks, crushing life out of them while hiding personal cowardice behind a badge and gun.
You installed a man into the highest office of the land, gleefully delighting in his political incorrectness even as he brashly brags about sexually assaulting women.
“Indivisible” — this autocrat has done more to divide the nation than any president in our history. He actively foments chaos, pitting Americans against each other for “higher ratings,” inviting foreign powers to interfere with our most precious freedoms, threatening the very systems meant to be a check on his unlimited power, refusing to follow scientific advice, and actively putting Americans in mortal danger by packing them into infectious mobs, all to bolster his fragile ego.
You follow this autocrat in unmasked lockstep, more interested in “triggering liberals” than ensuring those around you remain safe during the worst pandemic of the past 100 years.
You scream for years that a black president couldn’t possibly be American or even Christian (even though a religious test for office is not permitted). You can find no evidence of either accusation, yet you elect someone who began his campaign parroting these falsehoods, and then you insist your chosen autocrat is a Christian despite ample, daily evidence to the contrary.
Do you really think any of this remotely resembles the humble, loving, compassionate Man from Galilee who sought to heal and save humanity? He was a righteously angry Protester who flipped the tables and chased the merchants from the temple with a whip. His was a compassionate embrace of the oppressed with a mission of protest against those who would oppress humanity in God’s name simply to line their pockets. When you insist that the economy is more important than protecting the lives of the vulnerable, then you’re on the wrong side of history. The soon-coming King will again violently turn the tables in protest of the greed-driven oppression of His people. So when you say you believe in God, America, and the Stars and Stripes, I say that you’ve stood up to be counted with the enemies of all they stand for. Who gives a damn what you believe?
“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’”
“When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne. All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.
Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’
Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’
The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’
Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’
They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’
He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’ Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.”
