The abused need grace too (recognizing the privilege of privilege)

Warning: Stream of consciousness. I’ve always struggled with the messages of apostle Paul and Moses… I never knew quite why. This week, I mulled the story* of the white woman who took part in a seditious mob at our nation’s capitol being granted permission for a vacation to Mexico contrasted with the story of a 16 year old black boy who was sent to Rikers Island prison without a trial for 3 years, then committed suicide – all for for stealing a backpack. It displayed in stark contrast how white people and black people are treated so differently in our

The Lucifer Trajectory

When discussing original sin, many people think of the choices made in the Garden of Eden.  But that isn’t where sin started.  Sin began as a twinkling of rebellious thoughts in the mind of a high ranking angel in Heaven.  Lucifer. Ezekiel describes Lucifer’s trajectory: You were the seal of perfection, full of wisdom and perfect in beauty. You were in Eden, the garden of God; every precious stone adorned you: carnelian, chrysolite and emerald, topaz, onyx and jasper, lapis lazuli, turquoiseand beryl. Your settings and mountings were made of gold; on the day you were created they were prepared.

Should Christians be environmentalists?

Some Christians say the our environment doesn’t matter because it’s all going to burn anyway. Revelation 11:18 specifically says that God is returning to destroy those who destroy the earth. The original Greek uses the word ges, not kosmos. This specifically means the earth spoken of is the physical earth, not some philosophical/social/spiritual context.  The idea that it is OK to destroy a gift of God because “there’s a better one waiting for me anyway” is so selfish. It ignores the needs of anyone but self.  It reeks of a wicked, spoiled child who says he can destroy that which

The Last Crusade?

While seeing the drama play out these past three and a half years, I’m reminded of the scene from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade where Indy travels to Berlin to recover the Grail diary from Ilsa, who is attending a Nazi book-burning party in honor of Hitler.  He’s just escaped certain death (resulting from her very personal betrayal) at the hands of Nazis.  When he catches up to her in Berlin she claims not to believe in the Nazi ideology, but in a higher purpose.  In response Indy says, “You stood up to be counted with the enemies of

Responsible Liberty

This is not a political debate. Don’t anyone dare to respond with propaganda talking points. These are the dispassionate, scientific and historical facts: I saw a homemade billboard the other day that read “Liberty is worth dying for!”  This insufficiently subtle (also insufficiently educated/intelligent/compassionate) protest was another way of saying “You can’t make me wear a mask!” Au contraire. As citizens of the USA we are compelled to abide by the definitions of Liberty which the framers of the Constitution debated, accepted, and integrated into all the founding documents we still regard and review today. The definition of Liberty they

Taking God’s Name in Vain

We mustn’t become so wrapped up in fear of losing our freedoms that we forget our purpose – sharing the good news. Prophetically, we know we are going to lose our freedoms. That’s why we have to make the most of the freedom we have with the time we have.  Unfortunately, much of American Christiandom has become so wrapped up in a false construct of religious freedom (freedom for their own belief system, but not for others), that it is having the effect of chasing people away from Christianity because of the hypocrisy. We recently celebrated the season of Passover,

But the Economy!

The idea that Donald Trump has built an economy that is so beneficial to the average American is flawed.  He has built a bubble with tactical moves that temporarily inflate the economy. Like the tech bubble or the real estate bubble, while it is in growth everybody seems happy because it looks good on paper.   However the bubble is going to explode, and we will be facing another recession. The average middle class American can lose much of their investment in such a situation.  If they have enough resources to ride out the recession until the next bubble starts

McReligion: Tilting at Windmills

As I listen to Evangelical America today, I recall the Tony Compolo quote: I have three things I’d like to say today. First, while you were sleeping last night, 30,000 kids died of starvation or diseases related to malnutrition. Second, most of you don’t give a shit. What’s worse is that you’re more upset with the fact that I said shit than the fact that 30,000 kids died last night. I am reminded of the people who raged because so many marched wearing pussy hats to protest the sexual assaults by men on women and girls. One woman in Franklin,

Coerced Nationalism

Here we are again…  the leader of the country demanding the suspension of an athlete for not worshipping a national symbol. Let’s look at a historical story that may provide insight into our times. In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came to Jerusalem and besieged it. Several Jewish youth were taken from Jerusalem and brought to Babylon to serve the Babylonians. In the second year of Nebuchadnezzar’s reign as king in Babylon, God sent him a dream of a great statue made of various metals and substances. The king was
